Editorial: Shawn Mendes – A Fangirl Necessity?

Shawn Mendes is a pop-culture phenomenon. He has been setting unreal expectations for boys since 1998, which happens to be the year he was born. August 8th–the Mendes Army just might call it the best day ever. Coincidentally, it’s also his birthday! He was born to his mom Karen and dad: Manny. Karen is an English real estate agent, while Manny is a businessman from Portugal. Yet, they ended up in Pickering, Ontario before they had him and his younger sister: Aaliyah. His full name is Shawn Peter Raul Mendes. Today he is 6’2” at only 18 years old.

Even though Shawn is a popstar, he’s still human. Which means he has his “imperfections.” If you look closely you’ve probably seen a scar on his right cheek. He was experimenting with shaving when he was younger and it didn’t go so well. Along with his little scar, he has a lazy eye. It’s not that noticeable, but his left eye seems to go astray sometimes. Since he is only a teen he also has struggles with acne, which no one really pays attention to because they are too busy rocking out to his amazing music.

You may be wondering about his “life before fame.” Well he played soccer when he was little, but dropped that and switched to ice hockey. He also had a pet cat named Jasmine, but she sadly passed away.

Mendes also has preferences. His favorite color is blue and his favorite food is muffins. Although he doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, he really likes chocolate cake.

Now that you have the low down on his more “personal” life, let’s dive into his music career. He started out doing covers on YouTube, but then he realised that nobody was covering on Vine. He was 15 when he uploaded a cover of Justin Bieber’s: “As Long As You Love Me.” It blew up overnight getting 10,000 likes and gaining just as many followers.

Andrew Gertler, a talent manager, heard the song “Say Something” by A Great Big World on The Voice and thought it would be the perfect song for people to cover. When he searched for “Say Something covers” on YouTube, Shawn’s was the first to pop up. After watching it, he contacted Shawn’s mom about meeting up. Gertler later introduced Shawn to David Massey, President of Island Records. Other labels were interested, but Shawn and Massey clicked so he signed with him.

He later released his first single “Life of the Party” on June 30, 2014. It hit the 24th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on July 12. About one month later, the Shawn Mendes EP came out (July 28th). The next year he came out with his first album: Handwritten (April 14, 2015). Which included his first song he ever collaborated with another artist, “Air.” It featured swedish singer, Astrid. Along with “Air,” he wrote “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” with Camila Cabello. He later revisited Handwritten and added “Act Like You Love Me,” “Running Low,” and “Memories.”

Recently (September 23, 2016), he dropped his album “Illuminate.” He is going on a world tour for it soon with Charlie Puth opening in all North America shows, and James TW everywhere else.

Shawn Mendes was just a normal teenage kid, in a small town until he decided to post one Vine that jump started his whole career. He went from an app on his phone to selling out Madison Square Garden in under five minutes. He has also been on tour with Austin Mahone and Taylor Swift. But, no matter how big he gets, he never forgets to thank the Mendes Army (his loyal fans).
