Editorial: Is technology distracting us from life and what’s going on?

Is technology bad? Has it distracted us from life and has it gone too far? We use technology in our everyday lives. Technology helps us with tasks such as homework, schoolwork, and producing goods. However, we tend to lose ourselves in these machines. For example, cell phones are good for communicating, keeping you occupied, and keeping up with the latest news and posts. They are also used for binge watching your favorite shows on Netflix. But it is also dangerous. Cell phones are time consuming, and just a waste of money. 1.6 million car crashes per year are due to texting and use of cell phones. Nearly 330,000 injuries per year are from texting and driving. 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the united states are caused by phones. According to the National Cancer Institute research, it shows that cell phones cause cancer and other health related problems. They emit radiofrequency energy (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation, from the antennas. Here are some other electronics that distract us frequently.

Computers are another distraction. Yes, they help you with work and school but some kids just use it for video games instead of going outside and playing around. Games such as Minecraft, Geometry Dash, Fortnite, and Roblox take over kids’ minds and they get lazy. They don’t listen. Chromebooks in class are also a problem. In class, kids go on games when they are supposed to be listening in class and teachers get annoyed. Also, there is cheating. People can cheat on tests by looking up answers and formulas up and that’s why Hapara, enables teachers to organize their students and their assignments, track their activity and progress and dynamically personalize instruction across different metrics, was installed.

Lastly is TV. TV is already distracting enough. Parents tell kids to do something, the kids don’t listen, the parents get angry, that sort of thing. But now we have Xboxes and PS4’s. That’s even worse. It’s nice to talk over the phone and play together with friends, but some take it too far. Kids don’t get off the games and ignore everything. A big game that was blown up in the past couple of months is called Fortnite. Fortnite, created by Epic Games, is set in contemporary Earth, where the sudden appearance of a worldwide storm causes 98% of the world’s population to disappear, and zombie-like creatures rise to attack the remainder of the survivors. It’s addicting and is one of the reasons that kids get off task. Some put their backpacks down and jump right on the game without thinking of studying or doing homework.

We need to cut down on technology just a bit. It’s distracting us from life and it’s surely isn’t keeping us fit. Some kids don’t even want to go to school or play sports because they are too addicted to electronics. Yes, I understand, it’s fun to play games and communicate with people, and go on social media, but it’s also nice to get outside and be active once and a while.
