GPS Courses

Are you a student who is wondering about career paths in high school? Are you going to a Gilbert Public School for high school?  If you are, then great! GPS has some interesting and amazing career pathways and electives in store for you. Of course, in order to get into your favorite career path for college, you will need to take certain classes. There are so many options for careers but only a couple pathways.

Let’s start off with natural resources. This course includes programs related to the environment and resources.  These could be agriculture, earth sciences, environmental sciences, fish management, forestry, horticulture, and wildlife management. There are various career options in this path. Some of them are a zoologist, meteorologist, geologist, oceanographer, agricultural engineer, and veterinary assistant. Courses that you take in high school normally affect these options, so you would need to go into detail in order to figure out what classes you should take. Some of these include biology, marine biology, chemistry, animal science, landscaping and Ag business.

The next course would be Arts, Communications, and Humanities which includes electives relating to humanities and to the performing, visual, literary, and media arts. These include architecture, creative writing, film and Cinema studies, graphic design and production, journalism, foreign languages, radio and TV broadcasting, advertising, and public relations. This field gives you so many options if you like art, writing, history, or even just giving announcements. Career options that relate to this path are newscasters, teacher of the arts, journalists, cartoonists, dancers, fashion designers, and photographers. If you’re interested in this field you may want to take classes such as broadcasting and video production, photography, various modern languages, ceramics, metals & jewelry, dance, journalism, and art and design. Remember, these are only some of the classes that you can take.

Do you want to start a business? Then take the path of Business Systems which includes programs that are related to the business environment. These include entrepreneurship sales, marketing, finance, hospitality and tourism, and accounting. When working in this field, you could be an accountant, a financial planner, a retail buyer, sales, a travel agent, a bank teller, a city manager, an economist, or even a software engineer. In order to be these, you should take classes in high school such as 21st century applications, technology, business practices, game design, marketing, and personal finance, but seventh-graders, if you want a head start, here at Greenfield you can take a business class taught by Mr. Lwanga.

Engineering and Industrial Education is another type of course that you can take. Basically, this field consists of technologies necessary to design, develop, install, or maintaining physical system. There may include engineering and related technologies, mechanics and repair, manufacturing technology, precision production, electronics, and construction. You can start this field early by taking STEM at Greenfield, or you can wait for high school. You could become a hardware designer, a carpenter, an architect, roofer and all types of engineering including civil, electrical, chemical, and automotive. There are few classes you can take for this though such as, Ag Fabrication, Ag Engineering, technical theatre, woodworking and construction, electronics and robotics, automotive, computer refurbishing, engineering and design, and digital electronics.

Gilbert Public Schools also has a Health Services pathway that includes programs related to the promotion of health as well as the treatment of injuries, conditions, and disease. These could include medicine, dentistry, nursing, therapy and rehabilitation, nutrition, fitness and hygiene. This careers purpose earns tons of money and the jobs listed under this category are chiropractors, dentists, hospital administrators, nurses, music therapists, occupational or physical therapists, veterinarians, speech and language pathologists, doctors or surgeons, EMT, psychologist, nursing or dental assistants, dental hygienist, or a pharmacist. For these jobs you could take biomedical science, human body systems, medical interventions, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, applied biological systems, animal science, or sports medicine.

Lastly is Social Human Services. Social Human Services is a path that includes programs related to economic, political, and social systems. These include education, law and legal studies, law enforcement, public administration, child and family services, religion, and social services. This field of work does include being a Special Education teacher, Technology Education teacher, Athletic Trainer, Child Care assistant, Detective,  Lawyer, Librarian, Market Research Analyst, Police Officer, Social Worker, Psychiatrist, Marriage Counselor, and a Teaching Assistant. This field has many suggested courses but only for certain subjects, careers, or jobs. These include Child Development, Intro to TOYBOX, TOYBOX, teacher preparation, peer leadership/tutoring, teachers aid, sociology, psychology, criminal justice 1, criminal justice 2, leadership development, community service, parallel learning, and sports medication.

For Gilbert Public Schools, in order to graduate from high school you need to have 4 credits in English, 4 credits in Math, 3 credits in Science, 3 credits for Social Studies, 1 credit for Physical Education, 2 credits (in any combination) for CTE or Fine Arts, and 5 credits for Electives, so you need 22 credits all together, but Arizona University Entrance Requirements are a bit more complicated. You must have 4 credits of English, but they must be certain classes, Math has 4 specific credits as well, 3 lab science credits that must include at least three of the four areas like Chemistry, Physics, Earth, and biological sciences, 2 credits of Social Studies, you don’t need Physical Education to meet the, requirements but you must have one in order to graduate high school. Basically, you don’t have a choice on that one, also you need 2 credits in modern language. You need to complete two years of the same language so in total, you need 16 credits to go to an Arizona University College.

If you are still confused on what classes that you should take or just what a schedule should look like, then you’re in luck! I have a sample of a four-year General Studies Schedule should look like. Freshman Year: English, Science (normally Biology), Math, Physical Education, Elective (Fine Arts or CTE), Modern Language. Sophomore Year: English, Science, Math, Social Studies, Modern Language, Elective, Elective (Fine Arts or CTE). Junior Year: English, Science, Math, Social Studies, Elective (Fine Arts or CTE), Other Elective. Senior Year: English, Math, Social Studies, and then three electives of your choice.
