Editorial: Boys’ Bathrooms Closed

Last week, signs were posted on most of the boys’ bathroom doors reading “Restrooms closed due to lack of respect for facilities.”

This has undoubtedly been caused by the epidemic of vaping as well as vandalism. Everywhere, you will find toilet paper strewn about, wet floors, and missing (or empty) soap containers.

Now, to get to a bathroom, us boys have to go to the one restroom open which is in worse condition than any of the ones that were closed.

Many of the issues that are considered “lack of respect for facilities” could have been fixed a long time ago. Some soap dispensers have been missing since the beginning of the year. Some toilets have been broken for months.

Then again, some of these problems don’t have a very convenient solution. The school can’t really remove vaping devices from kids unless we have security screenings every morning (a technique practiced by many schools).

Obviously the school is short on solutions, but there has to be a better solution than closing almost all of the restrooms and leaving the worst one open.

Let this be a warning to those who are disrespecting the facilities: if you keep doing this, the boys likely won’t be able to use the bathroom anymore. The situation is bad enough already. Don’t make it worse.
