For months, a very popular meme was going around all of social media. People created a crazy plan, but did they go through with it? On Friday, September 20, we finally got to see what would really happen at the Area 51 raid.
Area 51 is a highly classified United States Air Force facility located in Lincoln County Nevada. It was a strong topic for conspiracy theories about why it’s so heavily guarded and what is inside. The majority of these theories say that the government has captured aliens hidden in the base. On June 27, 2019, a man named Matty Roberts from California started a Facebook Event to “ Storm Area 51, they can’t stop all of us.” Of course, this started out as a joke, but by the middle of July the idea had spread like wildfire and at least 2 million people claimed that they would arrive to the event and try to “save” a captured alien. Many people anticipated seeing what would really happen on September 20.
According to Time Magazine, the raid was nothing more than about 150 people going to the base and just standing a safe distance from it. It was pretty uneventful, but of the people that did come, the costumes and held signs were quite a treat. Some had thin foil masks, some had full green alien costumes, and most people held up posters that said stuff like, “Save ET From the Government” or “Jesus was an Alien” The most that happened was a small handful of arrests for trespassing, inappropriate public behavior, and more. A few of the people who went to the “raid” said that the guards were nice and even took some pictures with them.
A true raid of Area 51 would not have been a good idea, but the people who went seemed to have a good time, even if they didn’t get to see or take any aliens.
