Yeet! It is a word that you probably hear on a daily basis. In the present day, yeet has come to mean many things. But what does it actually mean? According to Google Trends, yeet started gaining popularity in February of 2014 after a 13-year old called Lil’ Meatball posted a video on Vine that consisted of a dance titled yeet.
Yeet can be used in many different contexts. In an article, dictionary.com stated, yeet is an exclamation of excitement, approval, surprise, or all around energy, often used when doing a dance move or throwing something.” For example a man that originated in 2014 started with a picture of a sandwich and said, “Time to yeet.” After, a picture of a man throwing the sandwich saying, “Time to yeet.” “ It’s like an excited yes,” explained a 17 year old, “… It’s like ‘yaaas’ but for younger people… It’s more like ’yes’ in the sense that ’amen’ is yes – like you’re acknowledging something.” Urban Dictionary says that yeet is “especially used in basketball when someone has shot a three-pointer that they are sure we’ll go in the hoop.” Yeet can also be used in a grunt, kind of like a verbal dab. Some admit that yeet is used as a placeholder and don’t really know what it means. Although yeet originated in 2014, most people say they never heard the word before last year. All in all,” yeet is a word that nobody agrees on. Nonetheless, it has become a large part of teens’ vocabulary.
