The term flex has been mostly associated with someone showing off their riches in a not so humble way. The riches that he/she might show off ranges from cars to fashion. People who usually flex get criticized for being considered arrogant and/or insecure. However, the original term has a bit of history with it, going all the way back to the 1990’s. Back then flex meant to “show off guts” or to “show off courage”. One of the most notable uses of the term can be seen in Ice Cube’s new 1992 song. Flexing is usually done to show dominance in terms of money.
According to Google Trends the term was at its search peak in from July 26 to August 1, 2015. Some example sentences of the term are, “look at that guy flex his fancy shirt over there at that guy”. Or in the 1990’s definition, “Jim was flexing on the bullies to stand up for his friend.” Flexing has been mostly done on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Overall flexing has come a long way ever since its was introduced in the 1990’s to changing definition in 2015.
