In junior high, the homework really starts to pile on. Coincidentally, this age group seems to be plagued with depression and anxiety. Is this really a coincidence, or does the myriad of homework every day have something to do with students and this poor mental health?
In the past, there has been some controversy regarding the amount of homework given by teachers and its effects. I think that a modest amount of homework can be beneficial, but teachers tend to give more than is necessary. Apparently, a lot of people agree with this statement. One of the most common negative effects of homework is stress. As work builds up, so does the amount of stress. This can include stress about due dates and overall grades. Other problems include exhaustion, sleep deprivation, headaches, and weightloss. Too much homework can immensely affect a student’s mental health, to the extent of causing depression and anxiety. These could both start small but build into a problem that requires professional help.
Another school-related concern is grades and test scores. Some people say that homework has no benefits regarding school at all. An article by huffpost.com states, “Too much [homework] can cause lower test scores.” In junior high, I believe this is the case with many. Teachers pile on homework and students are too stressed with other responsibilities to accomplish it. Although a good amount can help students develop good study habits and time management skills, in the end the bads outweigh the goods.
Clearly, the homework that is given should be necessary. A whole packet in one class, though, is just too much. Homework is good in modest amounts, sadly it isn’t really given properly.
