Kobe Bryant is a well-known legend across the world. He has played a long, 20-year career before retirement. On Sunday, January 26, 2020, Bryant died in a helicopter crash. He played for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he performed excellently. Outside of basketball, he was a great father and won a few awards. There is a lot more to this person than an amazing basketball star.
In 1996, Kobe Bryant started his NBA career when he was the 13th pick from the Charlotte Hornets. It was not long before he was traded off to the Los Angeles Lakers (britannica.com). Even early on, he was a legend as he became the youngest all-star player. He played extremely well and contributed along with Shaquille O’Neal to the Lakers Dynasty. Some of their dynasty includes multiple championships, excellent players, and more. He led the league in scoring and was named MVP in 2008. The Lakers’ domination of the NBA continued when he led the team to another championship win and titles as West Conference Champions. Kobe continued playing for the next few years, but had injured himself multiple times. Bryant decided to retire in 2016 after the last regular season game.
Bryant did more than play for the NBA. In the years 2008 and 2012, he participated in the basketball Olympics. The US went undefeated and won gold in the Olympics. In 2012, they won gold again with another undefeated record. After Bryant retired, he wrote a book, “The Mamba Mentality” and made the short movie “Dear Basketball,” which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
On a normal Sunday, Kobe and his daughter, Gianna, were flying a helicopter to Gianna’s basketball tournament. (nytimes.com). The day was foggy and cloudy, and the helicopter was flying a bit low, so the pilot started climbing at a fast rate. Not long after, the helicopter went down and crashed into a hillside, starting a fire. Kobe Bryant, Gianna, and seven others, including the pilot, were killed. There were no survivors. The news got out quickly and players, as well as people across the globe, were incredibly devastated as they mourned the loss of Kobe and his daughter. It was as if the sports world went quiet that day, and that was the main thing being covered all day. NBA players and people paid their tributes, such as the Raptors taking a violation and a moment of silence at the Super Bowl one week later.
As many say, Kobe Bryant (1978-2020) was a basketball legend that was gone too soon. He played very well, leading the Lakers to several championships and was a top scorer. To wrap it up, Kobe Bryant was an all-star legend that played basketball for the NBA and USA, and did a lot in his retirement until meeting his shocking fate.
